Replacing windows in Belgium: grants and what to check

Replacing old windows improves comfort and cuts heat loss. Support varies widely from one region to another: here is what to know before you sign a quote.

Support by region

RegionSupport for windows
WalloniaNo window grant since 30 September 2026. Funding possible through Rénopack or Rénoprêt within a project that improves the energy label.
BrusselsRenolution grants suspended: no grant for 2025 or 2026 invoices.
FlandersMijn VerbouwPremie “ramen en deuren” for income categories 3 and 4 only.

In Flanders, the window grant covers up to 50% of the invoice excluding VAT for category 4 and 35% for category 3, up to a ceiling. It requires high-efficiency glazing and ventilation conditions, and can only be claimed once every five years for the same home.

Regional schemes are explained in our guide Renovation support in Belgium.

6% VAT, across Belgium

For a home at least 10 years old used mainly as a private dwelling, window replacement can be invoiced at 6% VAT instead of 21%. The contractor must invoice the end customer directly and state the reduced rate on the invoice.

Which performance to aim for

  • Uw: the whole window (frame and glazing). The lower, the better it insulates.
  • Ug: the glazing alone.

For its former grant, Wallonia required a Uw of 1.5 W/m²K or less and a Ug of 1.1 W/m²K or less. These remain useful benchmarks. If you have a recent audit or energy certificate, follow its recommendations.

PVC, aluminium or wood?

  • PVC: good value and little maintenance.
  • Aluminium: slim frames and large glazed areas; choose thermally broken profiles.
  • Wood: warm look that suits older façades, but needs regular maintenance.

Don’t forget ventilation

New windows make a home much more airtight. Without enough fresh air, damp and condensation appear. Plan trickle vents or a suitable system; in Flanders, this is a condition of the grant.

Questions to ask before signing

  • What are the Uw and Ug values of the windows offered?
  • Double or triple glazing, and which spacer?
  • Are fitting, removal of old frames and finishing included?
  • Does the quote apply 6% VAT?
  • What guarantees cover the products and the installation?
  • Is planning permission needed (change to the façade, listed building)? Check with the local council.
