MaPrimeRénov’ in 2026: what changed on 1 September

MaPrimeRénov’ is the French state’s main energy renovation grant. Since 1 September 2026, both of its routes have been narrowed: here is what can still be funded and on what conditions.

Two routes, two approaches

  • The per-item route (“par geste”) funds a specific piece of equipment, mainly low-carbon heating.
  • Whole-house renovation (“rénovation d’ampleur”) funds a complete project to lift a home out of the energy-inefficient category, with mandatory support.

The per-item route, now focused on heat pumps

For applications filed since 1 September 2026, the per-item route no longer funds insulation, ventilation, wood stoves and boilers, heat-pump water heaters or solar thermal (except overseas). Still fundable include:

  • air-to-water, ground-source or solar-assisted heat pumps;
  • connection to a heating or cooling network;
  • removal of a heating-oil tank and an energy audit (alongside works).

Example published by the French economy ministry: a modest-income household installing an air-to-water heat pump receives €4,000, within a €12,000 expense limit. The home must be a main residence occupied at least eight months a year and built at least 15 years ago, and the work done by an RGE-certified professional. The application must be filed before work starts.

Whole-house renovation

It is for homes rated E, F or G on the energy performance certificate (DPE). The works must:

  • improve the rating by at least two classes;
  • include at least two insulation measures (walls, windows, floors or roof);
  • not install or keep oil, gas or coal heating in a detached house (rule in force since 1 September 2026).

The grant can cover up to 80% of the cost for the lowest-income households, within a €40,000 cap on works. A prior meeting with a France Rénov’ adviser and the use of an approved renovation adviser (Accompagnateur Rénov’) are mandatory.

Other support

  • Energy-saving certificates (CEE) paid by energy suppliers, combinable with the per-item route;
  • Interest-free eco-loan (éco-PTZ) to fund the remaining cost;
  • 5.5% VAT on energy-improvement work in homes more than two years old;
  • Local grants from regions, departments and municipalities.

From 1 January 2028, detached houses rated F or G will no longer have access to the per-item route and will have to go through whole-house renovation.

Key points

  • Per item: mainly heat pumps since 1 September 2026.
  • Insulation and windows: only within whole-house renovation, for homes rated E, F or G.
  • Always apply before starting work, on france-renov.gouv.fr.
